I was making CD labels today and got an idea about trying them on a rod.
Has anyone tried this yet?

They are photo qualiy paper and have sticky backs. Almost seems a natural.

I've tried lots of different label materials, but not that one. it's got to have similar properties to pressure sensitive labels that others successfully use, so try it on some scrap. If you're using an Inkjet, you'll want to spray clear Krylon on it to prevent the ink from running when you apply epoxy over it.

Larry I'm sure it would work, and if you do try it, then do as Mark suggested and use some sort of clear over your ink.

If you have my sort of luck, it will look great when you finish, but a few days spent in the sun and you will quickly see the ink start to fade. I've never had any luck with the inkjets. Decal Connection for my money.

RodMaker volume 9 #3 has all the details on getting good looking labels from an ink jet printer. There are some tricks that make it possible to attain labels and decals nearly as good as what you can get from commercial sources.

I've done quite a bit of experimenting with labels before, see my pic in the misc. photo section, search: label, or July 1, 2006, or Larry Erickson.

This label is ink jet on premium photo paper. I previously posted my technique for that label and have also since "tweaked" that method.

I have a couple of rods to start working on and plan on trying the CD Label material at the same time.

Also, to help the fade issue I now put the label under the rod to minimize the amount of sun hitting it when in use. I don't usually have a problem with ink run but the epoxy almost always tends to lift the label at the edges if I don't seal it first.

I used to do all my own lables. I used a variety of Avery mailing lables for the job. My printer is an Epson with the DuraBrite ink which is 'supposed' to hold up longer than regular injet types. One thing I didn't like was upon making labels with black backgrounds I had white edges after cutting it to size. I would then use a black marker to hide the white and that seldom matched up with the black ink used to print the decal. I'm not saying it was a dissapointing experience only that it could have been better. I always sprayed my inkjet decal with a couple of light coats of Krylon Fixatiff before adhering to the rod. No problems with epoxy application.

Once I used Decal Connection the first time I've not printed a single decal from my own inkjet. Doing your own can be fun and you can get decent results, but once you've seen a professional decal you'll not mind spending the few bucks to get it done.
