Permagloss over Threadmaster or vice versa?

Fellas,
Can anyone tell me which goes over which safely. First apply Threadmaster, then a coat of permagloss or permagloss first, then the Threadmaster finish? I forgot. Also is Permagloss used to coat the blank itself rather than finish? Thanks, Sanford Hochman Re: Permagloss over Threadmaster or vice versa?

Permagloss first, definately. It will look terrible the other way around. PG has sort of an eggshell finish and doesn't carry nearly the depth of image that TM or other polymer finishes do. I tried it on a coupleof flyrods years ago,and hated the way it looked, in spite of it's awesome performance characteristics.
Just out of curiosity, why are you using 2 different finishes? Andy Dear Lamar Fishing Re: Permagloss over Threadmaster or vice versa?

Andy,
I really want to coat the balance of the rod between the finished guides, and thought Permagloss would work for that purpose. I understood regular finished like yours is not used for that purpose, or would it work to coat the rest of the rod along with the guides with Threadmaster. It is a 6'6" rod for tuna, and the space between guides is not great. Thanks, Sanford Re: Permagloss over Threadmaster or vice versa?

Good Mornng Sanford,
Why do you want to coat your entire rod? If it is an old rod that you are renovating and has many blemishes and gouges, you might want to do that, but on a new blank all coating the rod blank does is add excess weight--particularly to the tip section, where it will slow the action of your rod. Oh I see.... no 2 part polymers aren't really designed for that. If it were me, I'd first re-finish the rod with PG. Then wrap and finish with TM. If the rod is new like Mike says, just wrap and finish with TM and leave the factory applied finish on the rod the way it is.

Sanford - most of the commercial tuna sticks are finished completely thread and blank with two part epoxy finishes. Weight is not an issue nor will it have an significant impact of the blank action. The finish really protects the blank against abrasion and chipping of the original finish. I have done several stand ups all finish and it turns out nicely. The longest run of blank between underwraps is about three inches. If the blank color is white Threadmaster would be the best choice of two part epoxy. Edited 3 time(s). Just wanted to add that while I agree that several coats of permagloss over epoxy can look weird and even a bit bad, a single coat does not give the eggshell look. I routinely use a final coat of permagloss over epoxy wraps. I believe that it adds a tougher outer shell, a finish for finish, so to speak, as well as a bit of a brighter and shinier look. Had no bad things happen over epoxy using LS, Flex Coat or Threadmaster. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
