I am sure nobody has done this but I was looking around on the internet a few months ago about Bamboo rods-just after I opened another adult beverage. The forum had an item on pros and cons of Tru oil on bamboo verus Spar .
Maybe this board has adepartment on bamboo and I got into it? Any advise other than not open adult beverages.

Most of the better bamboo rod makers do not use Tru-Oil (similar to a wiping varnish, it's a polymerized oil) on their rods. Most dip finish them with warm spar varnish. I know a very few who use a spar urethane.

I have done 3 bamboo rods with Tru-Oil. They came out very nice but I do not believe that they will hold up, finish-wise. as good as those done with regular spar varnish will. Bamboo doesn't really soak up any of the finish, it's outer surface is hard and dense. So you're left with encapsulating the rod with something. The varnish is just better at that than the Tru-Oil is.

Not that Tru-Oil is bad or won't work for this type application - it will, but it's not the best thing you can use when it comes to a bamboo rod finish.
