Repairing broken guides

I managed to break off a guide trying to clear ice buildup. If it matters, it was a single foot ceramic on a DanCraft 1005-4. Before I wade into the repair I thought I'd ask if there are any general guidelines for the process. I was just thinking that I'd delicately try to shave of a piece of the epoxy/thread with a scalpel (holding the blade across the blank), then try to peel off the remaining parts of the wrap (around the blank), try to do a very little surface prep (maybe a very fine sandpaper), and then redo the guide just like I did it in the first place.
Thoughts anyone?

I would heat (very carefully) the finish in the guide and using a razor blade, shave along the top of the guide foot so the blade cannot come in contact with the blank. The thread and finish should come off pretty easy. I wouldn't use sandpaper. A little heat and you can probaly scrape any residue off with a finger nail.

Use the scalpel and cut the thread on the foot of the guide. I'd use my heat gun/hair dryer to soften the epoxy left on thread removal and take as much as I could off with my thumbnail, then 3M pad to clean up as there is less chance of scratching the blank.

Hailing in way south florida ice rods arn't real big but when i lived in nortern new hampshire wealways used rec guides. Whether it be rsg or rspg they are great at bouncing back to origanal shape and don't need a ring anyway. try them you will be a convert i promise!
