I am building a CTS 14 ft. rod. Can I use masking tape as a shim on a two handed rod. There is a great deal of strain on the reel seat. Will tape hold up or should I use some cork rings under the reel seat? Thank you Jim Re: reel seat for 2 handed rod

James, IMO it is always better to use foam or cork as a shim under reel seats. Having said that, and I know there are many who disagree with this, until about 2 years ago, I used tape exclusively for my reel seat shims. I've been building for over 25 years and have only had one reel seat failure and it was an adhesive problem. I still use tape at times and I'm am very confident in it's properties. Again, I would suggest using foam if possible. I would not however be afraid to use tape if you choose.

Jim,
I agree with Jeff as well. Another thing you may consider, is drywall tape. It can be purchased inexpensivly, and is very pourous so the epoxy permiates through it and onto the blank for a ultra strong bond. Go to homedepot or Lowes to the drywall isle. You will see rolls of what looks like yellow or white square-holed tape. I mean the holes are pretty good sized too. I buy it in the two-inch wide rolls and then cut the width in half. One 200 foot roll will last a LONG time.!!! Paul Re: reel seat for 2 handed rod

Thank you guys. I will try your suggestions. The dry wall tape with the holes sounds good. I have built a lot of one handed fly rods but was a little worried with the larger 2 handed rod. Thank you again. Jim Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
