Matte finish

I'm looking for a matte finish. Is there a flattening agent I can add to Perma Gloss ? Or epoxy . I do want to finish the entire rod, even guide wraps.

Hi,

You could try this on a sample piece. Lightly sand the finish with a very fine grit(1000 wet/dry) paper and polish to suit with a good car wax. Fine cut rubbing compounds, 1200 or better will work also. I use 3M polishes with good results.

Klass Kote can be bought with an epoxy satin calalyst, they used to be a sponsor here and many use their products.

You can obtain flattening agent from most automotive paint stores. But it doesn't take much to be effective and you should be careful not to overdo it on the small quantities involved in finishing a rod.

Options for producing a MATTE FINISH over a rod & wraps:
PHYSICAL ABRASION - (EXTRA-FINE) SANDING
PHYSICAL OVERLAY - APPLY MATTE / SATIN FINISH VARNISH
CHEMICAL ABRASION - ACETONE, etc. [Probably the most dangerous option.]

Whichever approach you consider, you had better check & TEST your work (method & technique) on SCRAP SAMPLES FIRST. Otherwise, it may turn into a big disappointment, and make a lot of extra work for you, possibly RUINING the Rod Blank and the Thread Wraps.

PHYSICAL ABRASION of an existing Finish is probably the SAFEST method to use, since it is the most easily corrected if a "recovery" operation is needed if you have to go into "damage control" mode. ... Adding the Flattening Agent sounds like the next "easiest / safest / most likely to succeed" method, in my estimation. Proced with caution, whatever you do. ... TEST FIRST. ... B)- .

"Matte-ing" is a Finishing Technique that is NOT
in my book. ... Buena suerte, -Cliff Hall, FL-USA.
