Hi ya folks,
Can I hear about some growing pains in business from some others? Feast or famine!
Is this a good year or what?

Tight wraps and lines,

Wylie Wiggins – ‘Looks like it’s “Lights out” around the RBO Forum. (I’m using a flashlight under the blanket.) … Amuse yourself with these recent Post & Replies until the morning roosters spin their hard-drives over your question. Learn from those who have gone before you. Full-time Rod-Building is like going from paddling a canoe to operating a tugboat, IMO. Hang on to your day-job as long as you can, …-Cliff Hall

Ellis – Thanks for that look from behind the curtain with some of the Wizards of RodZ. Here’s what I have seen from my own experience & conversations w/ other rod-builders:
For the careful rod-building hobbyist, ~ 10-20 hours of active time (pouring over component catalogs; at the design drawing board; or on the rod bench), over ~ 2 weeks of calendar time, would be a median (or typical) investment of time, in my estimation.
For the full-time rod-building professional, it seems that a HUGE increase in efficiency is required, if you expect to stay in business for more than a few weeks. In my estimation, about 2-5 hours of active time, over 2-7 calendar days, may be a median schedule for a busy rod-builder, who does all the work himself.

A recent thread made me curious about the builders who visit this site. How many are full time builders, how many actually support themselves from building rods, How many have building as their sole income? How many of you are a business but mainly sell to support their addiction and maybe pay for some "Toys" or a few fishing trips and how many are strictly "Hobby" builders who just love the craft?? … This could be a very enlightening thread. Let us know what your level of activity / participation is.

I am a newbie to Rod-Building since January. Taught by some old Mexican Fart. My big thing I am curious about what is the average number of rods people make in 1 year. I heard Tom say 2 a year??? ... What is the average for a hobbyist vs pro or professional builder?

Thanks Cliff,
Two part time jobs with very randum scheduling and short periods of actual build time are what is really getting the best of me these days. A.S.A.P. the two part timers are out and a real job with set hours is the plan for me. I've been in this too long to just go and quit my main stay job, just as soon as I do I'll hate myself for it.

Tight wraps and lines,
Wylie

Hey Cliff!

I thought I was the only one who reads RBO late at night under the covers! Every time my wife stirs in her sleep, I have to slam the lid down on my laptop and play like I'm sleeping. She has to get up early to go to work (I'm retired) so she thinks her sleep is more important then me reading RBO. I could see it if I was looking at porn, but this site is important and educational!!

Got to go, the batteries in my flash light are almost gone.
