Rod Finisher?

I want to build a rod finisher for applying epoxy to the wraps. From reading previous posts I would like it to turn about 40 rpm.
So do I need rod supports with "wheels" to hold the rod in or can I use V blocks? Also at what RPM do you need rod supports with "wheels" before the rod starts flopping around? I also read some previous threads about idler pully's from www.herbach.com, but they no longer carry them. Does anyone know of a similar source if indeed I do need "wheels"? Thanks Doug Re: Rod Finisher?

I use v-blocks lined with felt with no problems. Just curious, what made you decide on 40rpm?? I have speeds ranging from 40 to 2 and now mostly turn by hand for about an hour and then turn at 2 rpm and get the best finishes that I have ever gotton (Threadmaster). Some builders use 200 to apply finish then hand turn or use slow motors..
You can also use the small wheels for shower doors, etc from a hardware store Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Rod Finisher?

I just want to use the the 40 rpm for applying the finish and then I was going to either hand turn or use a 2nd motor that ran less than 4 rpm to dry. From other threads on this forum, it seems like a lot of guys are applying finish at higher speeds like 40 or even 200 like you said. Doug Re: Rod Finisher?

Doug Build my rod dryingbox out of plywood .Lined it with X-mass lights . Used rollers from a pair of in line skates. Motor from a rotisserie off a old gas grill . Work great Re: Rod Finisher?

Doug,
V blocks will work but I prefer wheels! Regardless of this, I always use a tie down of sorts. It can be a Velcro strap arrangement or an additional idler wheel. You may do fine without it but eventually you will have a rod climb out of the wheel or V block rest unless you have some manner of retainer preventing it. This may cause an expression such as: " Oh deary me to day", to leave your mouth before you have a chance to suppress it. The manner the rod is attached to the chuck can cause enough pressure to lift the rod completely off the support if there is any shift to that attachment. I've tried lots of wheel materials and am now using the rubber wheels from cheap casters from a local home store. I also try to remember to put some painters tape on the blank where the wheels ride to avoid any kind of wear blemish.
