hypalon question

A question concerning hypalon grip material: can it be shaped just as a standard cork ring, i.e. lathing? I've never worked with it before (I have it on an Airrus rod, and am contemplating it in a custom rod for myself). I've noticed some manufacturers have it in tapered format, but their products are too long; I'm wanting to make some into split grips or short fore-grips.

Yes, you can shape it on your lathe. Use drywall screen 80 grit to start and take your time. Cutting it into shorter lengths is a piece of cake using a piece of cord or mono. Spin it on the lathe and cut with the cord as you would Cheese cake or Cheese.

D wrapping thread works well for cutting hypalon or EVA . EVA is lighter, but a little less durable, not a problem with bass rods. You can make split grips out of EVA preformed foregrips and save some time and they are inexpensive.

I have never worked with hypalon and noticed that it comes with an inside diam. My question is how do you plug the open end, do you glue up scrap pieces and put that inside the hole? Or do you use a different material? Thanks Mark

Mark,

Just use an appropriate gimbal, metal or plastic butt cap depending on the application.
