I'd give some consideration to velcro. One side fastened to the drum circumference and the opposing material in strips. You could fashion some shallow depressions as entry points for each rod.

Hooks and rubber bands will also work, but require more time to get the rod fastened and rubber bands do tend to dry out.

I like the Streamside Designs rod chuck. It uses rubber bands and has been the easiest & best rod chuck I've used and I've used several in my search for one I like. Go to Wallyworld or Office-blank & get a rubber band ball and replace bands as needed. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

Ralph,

He's talking about a drum dryer - the rods have to be fastened along the outer circumference of a drum/wheel.

I am looking into making one of these for myself. For holding the rods, I was looking at using Stoddard clamps (test tube clamps). I was going to dip the clamps in that rubberized coating you can use for tools to protect the blank from the clamp.
