Question on st. Croix finish

I am building my first St. Croix, an SCIII, model 3S70MF. I have heard on the board that some of the St. Croix blanks have a very fragile finish. This is a gray matt blank - is it one of the blanks with the finish that gets damaged easily?
I tried to search, but no luck. Thanks for any info.

Steve, the only experience I have with St. Croix finish problems has been with the SCIV and SCV rods (not blanks) but the finish on St. Croix blanks and rods is the same as far as I know. I've never personally seen a finish problem with the SCIII rods/blanks.

I have used several SCIII blanks. No problem at all with the matt finish. I did find the finish on an SCIV to be too soft. I like the blank but not the finish. With colored blanks I will go with the CTS brand.

The II's and III's are pretty durable finishes.

The IV's and V's...not so much. A white rag with denatured alcohol rubbed across the blank will turn blue or brown, depending on the blank you're rubbing.

Thanks. I wanted to be sure that the SCIII didn't have this problem before I started.

It's the SCV that you'll run into problems with. The rest are fine. You may see some color come off on a rag, but the finish itself won't be hurt. The brown SCV, however, will actually soften and remove down to bare graphite if you use anthing harsher than plain IPO alcohol on it.

Thanks, Tom
I use both 70% and 91% isopropyl, and will stick with the 70% in this case, just to be on the safe side.

Tom,
The problem that I had with the SCIV blue blank was that I wrapped some guides and did not like the placement. I removed the guides and can see and feel the indentations left from the thread. The SCIV made a great spinning rod for my daughter. It is a great jerk bait rod and she caught a bass on her first cast at a nearby gravel pit using an old Cotton Cordell stick bait.

I have had the same thing happen to me as Ellis had. Only with a SCIII blank.
