I have a question that has been bugging me for a while that I have no answer to:
I have noticed on the male furrell end of blanks, that some manufacturers seal/fill the end and some do not. Is there is a reason for doing or not doing that? Does it affect rod performance? Thanks If people spent more time on important things, there would be a shortage of flyrods. Re: Question regarding sealing the male furrell end of the blank.

Put about a 1/4in. of rod bond or similar into the male end of a tip over butt ferrule if it's open. It keeps the end round when flexing (stronger) and keeps dirt, water, etc. out of the butt section. Ralph If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again. You want to wait til the rodbond sets up a bit or else it will sag into the blank. Ralph I never considered that it keeps the section round (stronger) but I think it's true... Josh Markvan www.markvanheirloom.com Re: Question regarding sealing the male furrell end of the blank.

Personally I just don't bother with filling it. It does not seem to be a problem open. Once the ferrule is seated together it seems to me that the male part of the ferrlue is held round by the outside part pressing on it anyway. Re: Question regarding sealing the male furrell end of the blank.

That's only the good part. Don't forget feet, car doors and all those other little bumps & knocks, during which the rod is likely disassembled. The male ferrule stops being as much of a weak spot with the tip sealed. Ralph If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again. Exactly as Ralph said. The male end does take a lot of knocks when the rod is disassembled. As for any epoxy running down or leaking out, a little masking tape or electrical tape over the end can close off the end. Stand or hang the section vertically with the male ferrule down.
