O-Rings & Ball-Bearing Rollers

This came up as a comment on Carrington Tate's recent post on the photo page.

When you build your own "stuff", you might encounter difficulty finding compatible "stuff" to fit your selected components - specifically off-the-shelf wheels and O-rings that fit those wheels.

Using patio door ball-bearing rollers presented such a dillema for several of us.

It turned out that MSC Industrial Supply (mscdirect.com) has a large variety of stock O-ring materials in various diameters that makes O-ring fabrication fairly straight forward.

Ellis, if you need help shoot me an e-mail. Your e-mail is hidden.

Went to local plumbing supply house to get my O-rings. They had two large boxes divided like a tackle box full of rings. Local hardware store might also be a good place. Would stay away from large chain type stores for the rings (Lowe’s, Home Depot) do not carry that much of a selection

Got my large screen door wheels at Home Depot. They have very good bearings in them. The only thing is the grove is deep. I fill the grove then use fausit o-rings

Thanks Stan! I found the ball bearing rollers at Menards and Home Depot but searched all over town for O-rings that would fit. The groove is so deep that none of the rings I found will work. Do you have a stock number from MSC that will fit these rollers?

You can either fill the grove with thread and or finish. Or you can use about three o-rings to take up the gap. If you fill with finish, do when turning. A piece of tape to hold the wheel and bearing as one works.

Thanks Bill. I thought of that, too. But it sounds like someone has found one ring that will fit and if so I'd like to go that route. (I'm picky)

I cut my rings from leftover eva and hypalon grips and press fit/stretch them into place. The thicker material makes for great bumpers, and they are soft and will not mar the rod finish.

Chuck,

MSC catalog # 65076531. The description on the invoice is " 1/4" 250 BUNA-N CTL SEAL CORD STOCK." It can be ordered in the length you require.

The stock material has to be cut to size and glued up with Krazy glue. I made the cuts at a 45 degree angle and simply glued 'em up.

Hope this helps.

Stan

Unsure if it's a large deal, but I normally orient the direction of the scarf cut to that of the rotation, so the load pulls the cut together, not pushes it apart.

Good point, Ken. That makes sense as the way to get the best results & O-ring longevity..
