good morning all,
i am in the process of finishing a ultralight/light panfish rod. it is an ugly stick blank about 53 inches long, that i painted white with krylon fusion spray paint, and then sprayed a clear over the white paint. i am not real happy with the way the clear turned out. it just doesn't look like i think it should. i was wondering if any of ya'll have ever applied a light coat of say flexcoat lite over a painted surface? i know that this will make the rod a bit heavier, but how much it will hurt the performance i don't know. this rod is for a friends little girl (5 years old). he and i work at the fire department together. it is a beautiful white and pink rod, and is all finished except for applying the finish to the guide wraps. any help or input would be greatly appreciated. thanks. dave daniels.

before doing that get some polishing compound and work it on the blank. it should get the clear coat glossy and you can top coat it with a good wax. this usually gets rid of the dull areas and shines them up. good luck

The best thing to put over the paint IMHO is permagloss. put 2 coats. as long as you are sure the paint is completly dry you should be in great shape. Scott

Maybe I'm just a lousy painter but I've never been happy with any paint job on a blank -sprayed or dipped, urethane, Permagloss or epoxy finish.There are always waves, drip or uneven areas. Also, I think you'll find that pretty soon it will chip and expose the blank color beneath your finish and white paint.

Krylon Fusion Should be allowed to sit and "cure" for a week before messing with it in any way such as adding a clear coat. I used to use it, had similar problems, and have since switched to Auto Grade airbrush paints or appliance epoxy spray paints and automotice clear coats.

dont under any circumstances use rod finish epoxy on the whole blank youll have a major mess on your hands and will be even less happy with the finish you get

many thanks to all of you. i really wasn't to keen on the idea of the rod finish to begin with. the rod has been sitting around painted for a month, so it wasn't a curing problem, i just didn't like the way the clear turned out. it gave the rod a slightly dirty shiny look. anyway thanks again so much for the input.

Not sure what clear y ou used, generally you want to stay within a particular product line when coating finishes to prevent problems. You can sand it with 320 then 400 then 600. Clears are a little more difficult to apply because if you get them too light, they will "flash" - some parts will dry on contact while others remain wet and you get uneveness. In this case I would recommend a light sanding and then a wet, but not too heavy, coat. Depending on the material, that should even it up. If it flashes while you are painting, the material should be "hot" enough to recoat immediately. I put them vertically, standing on a nail in the ferrule and coat the sections one at a time to prevent overspray from one onto the other. 3 or 4 vertical passes around the rod should do it. I've also found it's best to do this in bright sunlight. Wet the area around where you are working with a hose to keep the dust down. Oh, and use gloss.
