What is the safest way to remove cork from a rod?

I use an X-Acto knife to slice into the cork being careful not to cut so deep as to get into the blank. Then you can "peel" most of the old cork away. What's left you can use your knife to carefully slice it away. Alterativly you could use a file or sandpaper to remome the small pieces that are left after you get the majority of the old cork off. Just do not sand or file into the blank.

Try placing the reeleat and grip into boiling water for 20 minutes or so to soften the epoxy or rod bond and twist off with pliers. Or cut a groove with a straight edge razor (be careful not to cut into blank) and "peel" off grip like shucking corn.
