How much $ would a beginning fly fisherperson have to spend
before figuring all this stuff out? Sheeeeece!

I could build a nice rod for myself at a fraction of the cost to buy
one but if will have to spend $200 or more and still not have the
best line and reel for it. Well, kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it?

A Texan who doesn't like chili... isn't that illegal down there?

Ray, I know less about fly fishing than just about anybody on the planet. I bought the same reel as Ellis did, for about the same price, which came preloaded with 5wt line, which is what my rod is. I don't have the experience to realize any shortcomings the reel may have, so I'm happy with it. I don't yet have the casting ability to know or even care if I need a different weight line. All I know is that when I cast, the line hits the water, at least most of the time, and usually still has a fly attached. I catch fish, so it all seems to work okay. Someday I might upgrade when I develop the skills to take advantage of anything that better stuff may give me, but that's a long time off I'm sure. Meanwhile, my well under $100 rig is serving it's purpose nicely.
