Decal Application and Coating

Hey all,

As you know I'm building a St. Croix fly rod on an SCII blank. I'm still a beginning rod builder, and did not put a decal on my first couple of rods but I would like to on this one. It's just the decal that came with the blank, saying the model and size.

How do I put this decal on the rod? To my eyes it just looks like a clear sticker with some writing. I assume that I will want to put finish over the decal after it is stuck on the rod for protection...I have been using Dura-Gloss LS Supreme on my wraps and it has worked very well for me and was wondering if a light coat of that would also be good for the decal.

Thanks,

Ian

Hello Ian
Decals can be put on a couple of ways and coating them with LS Supreme will work just fine. The main thing in coating them is not to put it on to thick and let the finish level. After applying the epoxy stop rotating and let the excess epoxy run to the bottom side and form a sag then "skim" off the sags, not taking to much off at any one time. Rotate 180 degrees and repeat until the epoxy no longer sags.
How to apply decals:
Take a look at decal connections web site for some simple instructions on how to put decals on. "Decal connection" is listed to the left here as they are one of the sponsors of this board.
If using a peel and stick decal remember to not touch the adhesive side with your fingers as that will leave a visible smudge. I like to use tweasers to start the decal coming off the backing and then use a stainless pick to hold it off the backing while aligning it with my marks on the blank.
Hope this helps. If you want to send me an email and I will send you a web site to see how to apply and skim off excess epoxy.

I may be a little off-subject, but where might I obtain a copy of this particular issue?

Thank you, Greg
