I had built a stand up rod for my boss in Dale Earnhardt Jr. colors. I painted the blank a bright red, made the wraps red with black/white/gold trim. Made a grip also in red/black/white. I put my boss's name on it in a gold Budweiser font. Looked pretty cool. Never used a #8 on it though because of the copyright thing. Anyway, he informed me this morning that he knows someone who is pretty close friends with Jr and that the rod is on it's way to Mooresville, NC to be signed by Jr. The reason for this post is that when it comes back signed I hope I don't mess it up by applying a coat of finish over it. I would imagine that it would be signed with a Sharpie. If anyone has experienced this type of signature coating please let me know. I do not want to get fired! I have a family to provide for! Steve,
I would think that if you put a coat or two of CP before applying finish it would be fine. Maybe try a test blank first . Randy. Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

You should DEFINATELY specify what pen he should use to sign it. Before specifying, figure out which pen YOU are able to apply finish over.
Worst case scenario, mess it up and re-sign it yourself. Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

Ditto Gerry, CP on certain inks makes it run really badly.

On something this important I'd NEVER apply a liquid (epoxy OR color protector) directly to the signature. Go to Wally World and buy a can of the above mentioned Krylon Fixatiff from their crafts department. Mask the surrounding areas and give a light spray. Do 2-3 light dust coats over the signature. After drying per the Krylon directions you should THEN be able to apply epoxy. Better safe than sorry...a project like this is no time to be experimenting with epoxy or CP directly over a signature!
I'd also recommend to them what type of pen to use...whatever you normally use and are comfortable with. You could even tape a pen to the rods handle and send it along. Also give SPECIFIC instructions for NO ONE to touch the signature after it is made...you know how they can smear! Best of luck!!! Jay (Dale Jr. & Scott Riggs fan) Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

The rod is already on it's way. Maybe a phone call with instructions is in order Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

As Jay says. The spray is better then wiping any over with the chance of smearing it. Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

He could sign it in chaulk or pencil and according to the can of Fixatiff, it will be protected.

I don't think I can just call up Jr. and specify what and where to sign. My boss better hope he doesn't sign the hypalon grip! LOL Re: I hope I don't mess this up!!!!!

My bet is that he does! Worst comes to worst...let it be a keepsake instead of a useable tool. It WILL be worth more one day than it did the day it came off your (or anyone else's) bench. Keep that in mind also. The value just went up exponentially.
