This forum has been under attack since the day it went online. It takes many forms, some are very simplistic and some are quite elaborate. There are many systems now that use automated scripts to seek and find places to put these various advertisements. I had to shut down the RodMaker guestbook because of the abuse it received.

There is never any reason to respond to any such posts - there is no one there that is going to read what you have to say. It's a computer script. A human has to initiate the program but there is no one behind any such post looking back in to see what you might have to say.

Part of this is just a sign of the times and part of it is a bit more underhanded. We are working on a solution but in the meantime we'll just have to put up with it and remove such posts as we're able to do so.

One other thing - many of these scripts are installed in the operating systems of those of you who run Windows operating software. That's right - your computer is a spam machine without you knowing about it. When you access a forum such as this one, the script that the spammers have installed in your Windows software will log this site (or others) and then spam the board/s from your computer while you're online.

As I ban the spammers' IP addresses, I have guys contacting me wanting to know why they can't post all of a sudden. Turns out, the spam was coming from their computer and their own IP address.

We're going to be trying some tests in the next rew days, with mandatory registration and captchka systems to see if they help reduce the amount of spamming that goes on here.

.................

Is there any way to find out if our own computers are doing the spamming? Man I'd hate think that I'm spamming sites when I visit them but how would you find out for sure?

I'm not sure how to tell from your own end, but I do know that about half the spam we've been getting here appears to be coming from users' own computers. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Keep your anti-virus software updated weekly or sooner and
run a anti-spyware program like AdAware or Spybot frequently
and most potential threats will be handled.

Ditto the ad/ spyware advice...Adaware from LavaSoft as a good one as well as Spy Bot. Both are free.
