2 cured coats of epoxy separating?

We all know that, after 24 hours at 70 degrees, you're supposed to rough your 1st epoxy coat with gray scotchbrite. Has anyone had a mishap when this was not done? 2 cured coats of epoxy separating when the rod was flexed or something?

I think I've done this but never had a rod returned luckily. Any experience with this?

I must be lucky, I've waited as long as 3 days before putting on the next coat and never had any trouble with it separating.

I have applied the second coat of Flex-Coat high build after many days past after the first coat.
Didn't have a problem and several of these rods are over 20yrs old now. Back then I did not
know to scuff the previous coat if enough time had past. Out of habit I recently applied a second
coat over the first coat that was applied 3 weeks ago. Crossing my fingers now!
Others with much more experience than I say to scuff so there must be a good reason!

I've gone a month between coats of Classic Coat and never had a seperation, I'll do a butt wrap and not put a weave on it for weeks, then weeks later add the guide at the end of the butt wrap and coat it all again. I currently have 8 rods in various stages of completion, several I've been working on for 6 months( split diamond wrap under each guide and two complicated weaves on each rod-I work on them when I'm in the right mood, doesn't come vary often)

Really awesome replies guys! Thank so much for setting my mind at ease. I always manage to get my second coat on while the 1st has some tack to it, but it's sometimes a pain. I'm not gonna worry about it so much. I use duragloss most of the time.

I personally have never heard anyone recomend scuffing after only 24 hours. I also typically wait up to 3 days w/o scuffing. No problems as yet.

When more than one application is made within 2 or 3 days, they will tend to meld together forming one single coat. There is nothing to separate in that instance.

At some point in the cure cycle, if you apply another application, it does not meld with the first. It simply forms an additional coat. Depending on the epoxy and the surface condition present, it can peel or lift off at some point. This is why it is recommended that you scuff the surface of the previous application if the epoxy has been on there for more than around 48 to 72 hours.

In any case, if you are going to apply more than one application, it's best to do within as short a time frame as possible. As soon as the first application has set or "tacked up," you can proceed with another.

Awesome guys. Great input. I think the duragloss instructions recommend the scuff after 24 hours.
