Thanks, Ed Smith Re: Source of Eucalyptus Wood

Ed,
Australia being the home of eucalyptus it's all over the place. Something you might not know is that in California and other US states, there is as nearly as many eucalyptus trees, due to their fast growth rate and a hardwood the authorities seeded large tracks of land destroyed from the gold rushes that defoliated large areas of land. You never know that tree in your front garden that you always wondered what it was might be a eucalyptus. LOL. Serious Ed if I can be of any help. Re: Source of Eucalyptus Wood

I live in Folsom, California which is an old gold town. We still have groves of Eucalyptus that were planted next to the railroad tracks a hundred plus years ago. It was planted there because of its rapid growth and the hot fires it produces. It was used to burn in the old railroad steam engines that ran out of Folsom. Never knew they came from Australia. I thought they were native since they are so commom here. I have noticed that many of the old ranch and homestead sites still have huge eucalyptus trees and fig trees still growing on them. Not much to do with rod building but I found Myles thread to be interesting. Ed, too bad you don't live out West, you could just cut all you need.

Thanks to all. I now discover that Weyerhauser has some patent or tradmark for eucalyptus grown in South America. They call it Lyptus. I would be just as happy to get some from California or Austrialia or where ever. Does any one know what difference it makes regardless of where it grew? Rich, do you know of anyone out in California that sells the stuff?
Thanks, Ed Smith Re: Source of Eucalyptus Wood

We have thousands of different eucalyptus trees downunder colloquially called “gum treesâ€, I’d be interested to hear what you guys are using.
