Help! I just finished all of my wraps on my first rod. I have been under the impression all along that the rod-builders epoxy is what was used to seal the wraps. I did NOT apply it to any wraps, I just threw the epoxy in the cup in the trash. I watched the Flex-Coat video again and figured out that he didn't use epoxy to finish the wraps. I looked thru my catalog and actually did see the stuff I think I need. I do not have any. I DO have U-40 PERMA-GLOSS. Does anyone know if I can use the U-40 PERMA-GLOSS as my initial wrap sealant? Or, do I have to order those syringes? Please help me!

Hi Casey,
Permagloss will work great as a thread fininsh but you will get a different look than the 2 part epoxy type. See Tom Kirkman's photo gallery for some interesting photos of wraps done with Permagloss. There are several types of epoxies used in rod building 5 min. adhesive, slower cureing adhesives, rodbond, and thread finish. Make sure you know which type you are working with. Also, do a search here for Peramgloss (all dates) Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: HELP!!!!!

Casey,
Unless you have a tight time deadline you have no problem. Every place that sells rod building stuff sells the proper epoxy for finishing rods. Flex-Cote Lite is very popular, and Andy Dear's new Threadmaster has been very well received. Trondak, the same people who make Permagloss, also make LS Supreme. Cabela's sells their rod finish in individual packets, and the results are excellent. Almost any epoxy finish will give you good results. So, order some epoxy specifically for finishing wraps. Also get some syringes (made for rod building), small brushes, some little plastic cups, and some stirrers. Most important, get some denatured alcohol and some lint-free wipes in case you make a mistake (like we all do). Beg or borrow a waste blank section and PRACTICE using the epoxy before you apply it to your finished rod. There are excellent articles all over about how to do it, including the forum library. Good luck, and DON'T PANIC. Jim Re: HELP!!!!!

casey
i'm pretty new to rodbuilding and yet this has developed into one of my pet peeves. the use of the term "epoxy" for what amounts to thread wrap finish. nothing you did casey. this goes waay back i guess. thread finish is not epoxy and isn't really designed to be a "glue" of any sort like true epoxies or adhesives, etc. (correct me if i'm wrong everybody) you said you figured out what you REALLY need. make sure you're right on this. there are many products you can use. what i'm using right now is marketed by Flex Coat, called Light Formula thread finish. since you're new to this, you could try andy dear's new threadmaster, found through the lamar fishing link on the left side of this page. search the archives to read up on it. i can imagine you've just finished your first rod and found permagloss as a possible substitute for what's missing. from one newbie to another, patience. order and wait for the "right stuff," something that you would use for several rods in a row as you learn to work with ts characteristics. after becoming familiar with a certain product, try somewthing new to compare. if you're fine with permagloss then as a standard thread finish (after reading discussion about it) then go for it. each brand of thread finish has its own set of idiosyncracies, some major, some minor. hence my suggestion to stick to one brand and type until you become familiar with it instead of jumping around from one type to another. if this will be your only rod, then no matter, but we all know the chances of that. eric fresno, ca. The epoxy sold as adhesive and that sold as thread finish are very, very similar. They have each been formulated to provide certain particular properties, however.
Casey, What do the bottles you got the epoxy out of actually say on the labels? The adhesive from Flex Coat will say something like "Rod Builders Epoxy Glude." The thread wrap finish will say something like, "Rod Wrapping Epoxy Finish." The former are usually in bottles with red and black lettering, the thread finish comes in bottles with yellow and black lettering. .......... Re: HELP!!!!!
