Went fishing and the guy next to me hit my flyrod with a lead head jig. There is a small ding on the butt section of the rod and you can see the grey graphite . How should I repair this ? Should I overwrap it with thread of simply put a drop of Flexcoat on it.?
Thanks Bill. Re: Ding on rod butt section.

Bill,
First thing I would do is this: Gather several grades of sandpaper from 60-320, and find a sturdy table leg. Sand the leg until smooth, and then find this guy and beat him about the head and shoulders with it :) lol. Then, I myself would do a thread wrap and coat with Flexcoat, or Threadmaster. Unless the ding is big enough to be a problem and you think there was some damage done to the graphite, in which case a fiberglass sleeve over the section may be in order. Or even a fiberglass rod section put inside. Chris Re: Ding on rod butt section.

You stated the butt section of the rod! where is the damage on butt 1/2?

If it just knocked the paint off in a chip you can color and finish over it. If it fractured the graphite you might have a bigger problem. Don't know if a thread wrap will do much for you there. Re: Ding on rod butt section.

If the rod has graphite damage, it may be wise to put an internal plug where the damage occurred. I believe without an internal plug and you continue to use the rod, a split may occur and the rod may be history. Use a magnifying glass to check for hidden damage.

It's on the butt section where the handle is and is only a surface ding. I just put some Flex coat on it and don't think there is any need for a thread wrap. I will probably do that in the Fall. Thanks for your help . Bill Re: Ding on rod butt section.
