Is it best to underwrap guides if weight isn't an issue? If so how exactly should it be done?

they do protect the blank as well as adding some decoration...
as for method..... wrap tight for the length of the guide foot and wrap PLUS the distance that you want the underwrap to extend by. burnish them well.. From here is a matter of opinion some people use a thin coat of finnish others dont go with what you feel comfortable with I personally prefer to as it allows the guide wrap to be wrapped as if there was no underwrap (smooth flat sealed etc) plus the threads dont slip into the underwrap if the tension goes up a bit Re: underwraps

It's not at all necessary but on heavier rods you can do it if you like. I normally underwrap with A and overwrap with C or D. You can apply a coat of CP or even finish, between the wraps. This will make things a bit easier.
