I was wondering if anyone has tried using the finishes we use for thread as a casting resin? I have alot of old brown finish I was thinking of coloring and casting for inserts, checks, and trim bands...any thoughts?

Jesse makes the Bad To The Bones and many other cast pieces out of Flex Coat. They consist of PVC pipe, contact paper, art work and Flexcoat cast in a mold.

Michael,
The finishes we use ARE technically casting resins. WIth the exception of Permagloss, Crystal Coat and a few other true "paints or coatings" most of the two part polymers we use for Guide Wraps are indeed casting resins. That is why I cringe whenever I see someone using FlexCoat as a finish on a rod blank or on a piece of wood or cork handle. Not that it won't work, it's just not designed to be the optimum coating or "paint" for anything really.

Thanks Bill, I'm staring at the "bones" I got from you..thinking of other ways, with the use of finish. Jesse's encapsulation method is really cool and its great to know he's using Flex Coat. ...I hope he's comfortable this evening, keep us posted.

Mike , I have used an 1/8 inch of high build tinted with TAP out of a cup for trim rings in fly handles (small dia stuff) Got to let it cure good before trying to turn it down when it's sandwiched inbetween cork rings , or it'll make a mess . Have fun fellow NERB ! JHD

Andy ask Ralph if he knows what Epon 828 is and why is guanadine carbonate (bat poo) added. Then duck! When I told him I used 2,000 gallon batches of it in 1963 he really cracked up! It was the first commercially available mass produced casting resin. I pumped it down oil and gas wells to stick grains of sand together in the oil bearing formations. It was the product that got him to thinking about rod finishes. I wonder how many trim rings could be made with 2,000 gallons.
