I'm about ready to apply finish to a bamboo rod I wrapped in silk. I've looked in my Home Depot, Lowes, and True Value, but I can not find spar varnish. Would Perma Gloss work well, or should I extend my search area for the spar varnish? Re: Perma Gloss on Bamboo Silk?

This is what PermaGloss was designed for. Go right ahead with it. Gives a thin coating like spar, but much clearer and longer lasting.

I've been using it a lot lately on nylon for a very tough finish. I leave just a touch of thread texture remaining, like older rods had. 4 days after the final coat, Permagloss is so tough that you literally can not scratch it with a thumb nail AT ALL and it is hard to scratch with a metal object. Use good ventilation. Re: Perma Gloss on Bamboo Silk?

Mike I have used PG on several bamboo rods both as a rod finish and thread finish it really does a nice job. Re: Perma Gloss on Bamboo Silk?

I use permagloss on 90% of my rods. Be forewarned that it might end up "patchy" looking on white silk. This doesn't happen on nylon, but it does on silk. I think it looks kind of cool that way, but you might not. If you want it to be very clear/transparent, use a heavy coat of thin epoxy instead and do whatever it takes to keep bubbles out from under the edges of the guide feet.
