Business Question for the Board

This is for anyone that wants to reply. Do you have a set amount of time you allow your customers to pick up a rod after completion. For example, say you complete a rod on May 1 and you let your customer know their rod is done. Do you give them a time frame in which they need to pick up and completely pay for the rod? Thanks for the info. Tight lines

Most of the time I take a deposit to cover some if not all the cost of components of building a rod just for insurance that the customer will come back to pick up the rod. I sometimes will forego the deposit if I have a returning customer that I have built a relationship with. I also have at the bottom of my build up sheet that I use to list what the customer wants a warning that any rods not picked up after 30 days from notification of completion will be sold. I have the customer sign this sheet and they get the carbon copy.

If you collect the money up front. You won't have this problem. If by some chance you do just get their mailing address. Also tell them that you are including the cost of shipping in the rod, and if they choose to pick it up in person you will refund the shipping charge at that time. If they ask why you do it that way. Tell them that some times customer can not get back for some time and this way they don't have to do with out their rod if that happens. Also because of those delays, you don't have the space to store a lot of extra completed rods.

Probably the best way to do this, is to get 50% up front and 50% at the time of completing. This puts both the customer and the builder out enough that both will live up to their obligations.

I'd give a customer 30 days after initial notification to pick up his rod, or he would forfeit his deposit and you can sell the rod to someone else. Do make sure you give him every benefit of the doubt, at least two phone calls and one letter sent by USPS.

Definitly give the customer the benefit of doubt!!! I had a customer order 4 rods, I called him upon completion. He said he will be by in a few days with the 50% balance and pick up the rods. 2 weeks later I call and leave a message. A few more weeks pass no word. I contemplated tagging the rods for sale. Then one day a man staggered into my shop, speech slurred to the point I could barely understand him. On more than a few occasions Ive had drunks wander in, due to the liquor store nearby, some quite entertaining, some downright obnoxious. This guy was leaning toward the latter. I was just about to escort this guy out of the shop when his wife came in and apologized. The man was the customer I was trying to contact. I didnt recognize him. His wife explained what happened. The guy had a stroke at age 40, and was in a coma for weeks, and the first thing he remembered when he came to was the custom rods he was looking foreward to picking up. I felt like a fool.

Scott,
Your story hit close to home. Eight years ago I had a stroke, was paralized on my right side and had a speech emparment. After 2 months in a rehab-hospital I was allowed to return home and 3 months later I returned to work (at a prison). I had good dexterity in my right hand so I started building rods again. The first one I built was for the physical thersophist who work with me for 2 months I will never forget the look on her face when I walked into the rehab-hospital with the rod I had made for her. Rod building has taken a new meaning for since my stroke!

Mr. John Keys – Hat’s off to you, Sir. Keep your hands and your brain busy, and you’ll continue to do well. Stick with your prescribed regimen for blood thinners, and stay active in mind and body and spirit.

While I was a Doctor of Pharmacy student, I had an 8-week Internship at a VA Hospital in an Anti-Coagulation “Coumadin” Clinic. While monitoring their INRs & counseling these patients, I met hundreds of Veterans who were at risk for stroke. And dozens of them had already had one. … When I came to realize how much their lives had changed, and how debilitating some strokes can be to those who survive, … it literally made me cry. … Without good wives, some of these fellows would have been nearly helpless. …

One older friend, an Usher from Mass, would probably be dead right now if his wife, who was a nurse, had not been home when he had his stroke. I saw her in the ER waiting room that morning. The t-PA “Clot-Buster” medicine worked like a miracle on him, … but it doesn’t on everyone, …

And during a 4-week Geriatrics Internship at a VA Nursing Home Hospital, I met the stroke victims who needed total care. … I sometimes think that I learned more about humility & compassion in those 12 weeks than I did in the previous 12 years of my life. …
