Cork Sealer

Hello all -

Reading various threads on sealing regular cork, it appears that most use tru-oil. I'm having some challenges finding this in the Toronto area. Can anyone suggest an equally good alternative. Lee Valley carries Tung Oil, polymerized Tung Oil and Tung Oil Sealer. Anyone have experience with this? If so, would you share this with me please.

.. and frankly, do you recommend sealing non-burled cork? If so.. with several brushed on coats?

Thanks for any advice folks - rs

I don't seal any of my cork. It's just a decision you have to make based on cosmetics and the ability to reduce dirt and grime from getting embedded in the cork surface.

U-40 cork seal is made for sealing cork, but it does not provide the shine and luster that Tru-Oil does. Just depends on what you're after.

Thompson's Water Seal is also good for sealing cork. Like the U-40 product, however, it does not add shine nor luster.

I think tung oil is toxic, its never used on wood eating utensils. They tell me the Cork seal does not make a grip slippery, I must not be wiping off enough of it then, but it does wear in high use areas and no one here has counterdicted that aspect to date, but the sun rose again today and its a new day. The trouble with wear spots is you can't touch them up with out the area looking splotchy, and to recoat you must sand the entire hangdle as it is recommended that you only apply one coat.

If you can't find anyone who sells it in Toronto you could contact Birchwood Casey and they could probably tell you who sells Tru-Oil Gunstock Finish in Canada.
You also might be able to order it direct from them. Below is the web site.

I use Futures floor wax on my handles, a trick my teacher taught me. pour generously on paper towels after the final sanding and rub into all the cork. It smells fantastic and is so easy to put on more coats

I am located in BC,Canada and have found Tru Oil in the local Walmart store in the sporting goods section. It's a gun stock finish so it should be by the gun accesories there. If they don't have any in stock, they will be able to order it in for you.

I've only found it in the spray can version so far,but it works well.In fact, the spray can lets you coat a grip or seat pretty fast, you just wipe it in with your finger or something to make sure there are no drips.Costs about $8 Canadian I think.

I love Tru Oil for burl cork, but prefer natural cork grips to be either bare or coated with a single thin coat of U40 Cork Seal to keep the "feel" of cork.
