Hello,
I am fixing up an old fly rod, specifically, I want to attach a fighting butt to the aluminum reel seat. The reel seat has standard metal end cap/butt cap. Is this end/butt cap removable, such as by applying heat? Or am I going to have to saw it off? thanks Re: Butt cap/end cap on metal fly reel seat

Heat with hot water, (near boiling) or some other controlled means that limits the heat to the butt cap area and you may be able to loosen it. If it was attached with 5 minute epoxy heat can do the trick. If heat fails at first you can immerse it in ice after heating and perhaps the temperature variation will break the adhesion. Another, low-tech way: locate a short length of re-bar, round-stock, or whatever you have aorund the house that will fit inside the seat, and stick out an inch. Next, wear a leather glove, and give the dowel a good whack with a hammer, pulling your hit at the moment of impact....yielding a sharp but decisive rap. A long steady blow may follw thru to the seat, and you don't want that. Tthe dowel and the end cap will fly by in under 3 hits. Usually on the first one. Watch your toe.
