After attending some of the seminars in Charlotte I wanted to attempt to turn my own handles with a mini-lathe. I found a use Mini-jet lathe with 8 tools in my area for sale for $225, is this a good deal or should I pass. I found a new one on Amazon for $249 with free shipping, however, without the tools. Would I need to purchase anyhting additional to turn handles??? Re: Good Deal???

You will need a 3 or 4 jaw self centering chuck as well as a drill chuck for boring out the grips, seat, etc. The first thing that I would recommend would be to get Andy Dears DVD on wod turning for the rod builder Great DVD available from Lamarr on the left. It's not mandatory, but the extension bed makes it a lot easier/convenient/flexible.
Good deal would depend on the quality/type of tools since new Jet's, Turncrafter Pro's, etc are less than that. As far as rodbuilding goes, I can't think of more than 3 or 4 tools that you would use. parting tool, gouges, skew and maybe a round scraper. I'm sure you will get many opinions Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Good Deal???

if the lathe is used, it might just have the chucks you need; 3 or 4 jaw and maybe a drill chuck. If it has them, and the turning tools, it might be a good deal. When you buy a lathe new, the chucks are extra. One thing to be aware of: You will spend as much or more on equipment to keep your tools sharpened as you did on the lathe setup. If you don't get the grinde and maybe a Wolverince jig, you'll be out of business after a handle or two. Re: Good Deal???
