Hello all.Hope everyone had a great time at the rod show.I wish Jesse and his family the best.Wasn't able to attend but you will see me there next year.I am in the market for a new lathe.I have been looking pretty hard at Jet's variable speed mini lathe.Any opinions, shortcomings? How about chucks? I have been using Andy Dear's mandrels on my Grizzly mini lathe but had to shorten them.Sorry Andy.I turn mostly cork but am starting to do more and more wood.I guess i am looking for more power and stability.Any input or info is greatly appreciated.Feel free to email me directly at kwdw98@rr1.net.Thanks Re: new lathe ???

Any of the Jet/Delta/Frisch/Turncrafter type midi lathes are tremendous values. You would be hard pressed to go wrong with any of them.

Woodcraft is now selling a Rikon Mini Lathe which has gotten very good reviews by the woodturning community. It's the only mini lathe I know of that comes standard with an indexing head. Be aware that with any of the VS lathes, you still have to move the belt depending upon the speed range you want. There is a retrofit available, made by a woodturner, that does not require moving the belt at all. He's in the process of figuring out selling them, but the price looks like it will be about $100. I'll post something here when I know more about it.
As far as chucks are concerned, I have a Nova Midi which is very good, and it will grip Andy's 1/4" mandrel just fine. If I were buying a chuck today, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Apprentice Chuck from Craft Supplies USA. Unlike the Nova which comes with only one set of jaws, this one comes with 4 sets of jaws and is easier to operate than the Nova Midi. Whatever you do, don't waste money on the Penn State Industries 3 jaw chuck, the runout is unbelievable. Re: new lathe ???

Gerry, thanks to your suggestion, I got the Nova Precision Midi chuck during the Charlotte trip. It's far superior than the 3 other chucks I'd wasted money on. I'm now hot to get the 25 mm Nova jaws as well.

Craft Supplies USA in Provo, UT has the best pricing I've seen on Nova chuck jaws, much better than Woodcraft. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
