Applying finish at 200 rpms & dryer box question.

I dug out my motor that I use to apply crest rings on my hunting arrows and found it's in the 200 rpm range. There was a recent post about how well finish can be applied at this speed in conjunction with a clutch I think. Without a clutch and if I fill the tunnels first, any other tips at applying finish at this speed? I always seem to have trouble moving the finish over the top of the foot and then moving it around to the end threads of the Forhan wrap under the ring on sf guides.
Also I thought about building a drying box to both apply finish in and then let the rod rotate in until dry. Is a 4' long shop light sufficient enough to generate some heat or do I need to install a series of conventional light bulbs? Thanks. Re: Applying finish at 200 rpms & dryer box question.

Arrange you work bench with a switch to cut the motor off and on for application of the dot of finish to the extensions on the Forhan. I do not worry about the finish on the first coat while I am applying because if mostly soaks in anyway. You can easily stop the rod and dot the ends while static and cut it back on to complete. I slice the switch along on the bench top. Some guys have rigged a long board that they depress to stop the motor instantly while working the ends. Figure out how to get this to work for you and you will really be pleased with the high speed application. You should move the rods to a slower dryer motor. I get the finish on at 200 take them off and place on a 4 rpm dryer. I do not have a heat problem and can be of no help.

Anyone that can apply finish at 200rpm is a true artist. (I would like to see it). Basically I have my drier hooked up through a variable speed petal switch so that i can morve the rod as needed via the switch. Once I get close to the amount that I wish to apply. I turn it lose full speed (by-pass petal switch) for 20-50 turns. (If you have put too much, it is going everywhere, walls ceilling, face, etc.) Scrape off execess with narrow plastic card. (AKA as a Mike Barkley doctor knife) Resume turning at 200 rpm.

Hello Tim
Applying and getting a very straight edges on epoxy finish is easy at these rpms using a spatula. On a single foot guide or a double foot guide the process is the same. Covering the "forhan" wraps is easy. There is as almost alway the bare spot "behind" the guide foot at the guide ring. A little practice will help. Send me an email and I will send you my web address which has a tutorial on this process. "[email protected]" At the truly great gathering in Charlotte many people did it in the Trondak Booth where U40 products were demonstated and folks try it for themselves. For best results mix and apply epoxy rod finish following the instructions on the package and have the ambient room temperature at at 70+deg F. If I can be of any help let me know.
