In a box of stuff that I bought at a yard sale, I found I had a set of checkering tools used in gun stock checkering.
I thought about checkering a casting rod grip and wondered how it might look and feel.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you checker it were you will be holding it. I think you will find it irritating on you hand as the day goes on. If you checker areas that your not holding, I think it would look awesome.

I spent about 30 years of my life making gunstocks, and at one time could checker with the best of them. Checkering can be performed ONLY on the very hardest of the hardwoods. Walnut is the classic gunstock wood and checkers beautifully. Maple can be checkered with some success, as can most of any of the classic gunstock woods. You just cannot checker cork, or pine or fir or cedar or most anything synthetic. A checkered walnut fishing grip feels just fine if you checker it with a fine line checkering (20 line or less), but I never heard of anyone using walnut as a fishing rod grip . Don't even attempt to checker a cork casting rod grip. All you will due is chew up the grip.

I did some walnut grips with checkering several years ago. Looked and felt great and was very unique. I haven't done checkering since that time frame though I've recently considered doing a few more grips like that. Practice a LOT on some scrap dowelling first. If you don't drink, this is a great time to start. Doing this type of work on a curve is bad enough... doing it on a small diameter cylinder can work your nerves down to bare wires! Take your time, use a light hand and several passes, and I think you'll be very pleased with the result.

I do no tunderstand what Checkering is. Can someone provide a link with pictures? I know this is different than what people refer to when they checker cork/EVA.

Ahhh. That's pretty cool. Probably the gunstock equivalent to doing a diamond wrap with 100 weight silk, lol.

It really does make for a nice look and non-slip grip, but it also provides many opportunities to screw up a nice piece of wood, lol. Kinda fun though, and relaxing if it isn't somebody else's material.
