I see a lot of rods being built with out a forgrip. It’s been fun explaining to customers the advantages of a spiral wrap on a casting rod. Most look at them like your crazy until they fish one. What are the advantages of no foregrip?

Go back many years to the age of wood or bamboo casting rods - many of them didn't have foregrips. Rich Forhan popularized this with his Revolver Rods in more recent years.

The thinking is that you really don't use a foregrip on most freshwater type casting rods. You hold the reel more than the foregrip and thus, the foregrip just becomes extra weight - something put there only because it's become traditional to have a foregrip on a rod. By elminating it, you reduce weight and therefore increase (hopefully) rod performance and sensitivity. I'm not sure how much that really holds true, as the slight weight of a foregrip is down pretty low on the rod, where it won't affect the rod much. Still, as part of a package - no foregrip, split rear grip, cut-away reel seat, etc., you should see a measureable weight savings and in most cases with regard to a fishing rod, lighter is better.

The big advantage that I see is that by having no foregrip I can keep by index finger directly on the blank and get a much better feel of what is happening to the lure. I was surprised at the additional sensitivity.

I personally feel that a spinning or casting rod with no foregrip is as ugly as five dollars worth of home-made sin.

Make 'em aesthetically pleasing AND functional.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" I find a nice sloping ramp from the front of the reel seat down to the blank, either tinted or wrapped with thread is far more appealing than a bulky clump of cork that to me is neither aesthetically pleasing nor functional (on most rods)
