I am attempting to build my first rod and am having a few minor problems. It is a 9' 3 peice rod and I am not sure where the grip should sit on the blank. If anyone could give me some advice on the grip and reel seat assembly it would be greatly appriciated!
Thanks, William Re: First Rod Problems

The grip should reside on the butt end of the rod. Hard to give a better answer with so vague a question. Re: First Rod Problems

if this is a fly rod the reel seat will be right at the butt and the cork just forward of that. the whole assembly will cover about 10" of the butt section of the rod. go to the photo section and look at ome fly rods. we need a little more info on the type of rod you are building. Hey Will,
I'm fairly new to this too. When I wonder what to do, I go look at some factory built rods for basic information. I check the length of the handle and reel seat, guide placement, butt wrap length, what's done at the ferrrules, etc ... If you're like me you probably have plenty of rods you've bought laying around the house to use as examples. That will answer a lot of the easy questions. After that, I screw up on the more detailed stuff. That's what this forum is for, these guys will help you with all the little problems and are eager to pass on their knowledge. Good Luck. MItch has offered some basic but very helpful advice. When in doubt, seek out similar commercially made rods and you should be able to get the general gist of things.
