PERMAGLOSS (PG) is a XYLENE-based, pre-catylyzed, MOISTURE-CURING URETHANE developed by Ralph O'Quinn, Mr. "U-40 / TRONDAK". It lays on thin and dries very fast and requires plenty of ventilation. Dries hard, but stays flexible. Slightly satiny or eggshell texture on threads.

Go to [u-40.com] For more information and to see the other great products Ralph makes.

Here''s one particularly good Post & Replies from the RBO Archives:

How to use U-40 Perma Gloss Ivo Balinov April 2, 2005
[www.rodbuilding.org] ""Hi All, - I am about to use Perma Gloss for the first time and was wondering if there is anything specific in working with it as compared to epoxy-based finishes (other than applying multiple coats). Should I apply with a brush or a hard object (i.e. a bodkin) is better? Is there any preferable speed for the turning speed of the drying motor? Does PermaGloss get along well with color preservers? ... I would greatly appreciate some advice from the experienced. Thank you in advance Ivo"

There are DOZENS of other full Threads on PG in the Last Year.
SEARCH = "PG" or "PERMAGLOSS" [Mssg Body + Subject] LAST YEAR
Have fun reading up, ... -Cliff Hall+++

I have used the stuff, it is hard to get around the occasional fly specs, but still all in all nice to work with. The only draw back I have encountered is the fact that is does not keep well, only one use per bottle. I have poured off a seprate amount to use and quickly sealed the bottle, and then I added marbles to fill up the bottle so no air is trapped1, but 6 months later its a solid marble/BB filled rock.

How to keep Permagloss fresh for years on end has been covered here many times. Just do a search and you should come up with it. Look for the thread about the metal paint cans.

Permagloss was designed for use on fishing rods. It won't melt your blank and is actually harder and more abrasion resistant than epoxy. It's also more flexible. In many ways it is a superior wrap coating, but it does not give the look as epoxy does.

Hey Cliff Hall,

Take a small piece of permagloss film and put it in an IR. Look at that C triple bond N. cyanoacrylate all over it. I suspect it also has some methyl or ethyl acrylate in it too. I haven't gotten it into a GC/MS yet but I plan to. Once I get that I think I will Know exactly what it is.

Ralph will be in Charlotte for the big national show as well (Trondak U-40 booth). He'll be more than happy to answer your questions and even show you how he uses it.

Permagloss can be thickened a tad just by waiting a bit before you use it. Some builders commonly let it set a bit in the application cup until it gets a little thicker and then apply it. Reduces the number of ultimate coats needed but it will be much harder to work with. You can't brush it around, you almost just have to apply it in one revolution and let it go.

Chris
Keep it in the refrigerator. Lasts longer
Ed
Not thicker - slower and not as hot. Would be a better product. IMHO

Allen,

If your product is acetone based, it's not Permagloss. Unless somebody is using the trademarked named coined by Trondak for the product here in the U.S. I seem to recall Ralph telling me that they do not ship it overseas.

I keep my permagloss bottle in a large, plastic lidded glass jar with a pile of dessicant packets, the kind that come in shoe boxes with new shoes, in vitamin jars, etc. I actually go to shoe outlets with my girlfriend so that I can scrounge these packets off the floor. My bottle is almost two years old and going strong.

That's a great idea, Josh. I've had my wife bring these zip lok bags full of these home from Wal~Mart (where she works) and have stored my primers and powders for reloading with a bunch of them for many years. I'll try this idea; the moisture-curing urethane that Permagloss is, taking the moisture out of the air and getting it sucked up by the dessicant just plain makes sense to me.

Ed Smith - Cyanoacrylate! ... I WISH I had access to an IR! ... Well, everytime I hear acyanoacrylate, I think of KRAZY GLUE. Fastest, strongest glue ever, as far as I know. They had to weaken it to reduce all the personal injuries in the late 1970's.

And every time I hear cyano, as in cyanide, I think of how the HPLC solvent I used to use by the 4 gallon case, called ACETO-NITRILE, is more descriptively known as METHYL CYANIDE. ... That is a moniker that clues you into its neurotoxic hazards. It may not be labile in the room, but who knows what happens internally.

I always thought it was the xylene solvent that was the most offensive component of PG. (But I suspect that the cyanoacrylate is the catalyst, and only present in small quantities, especially compared to the xylene solvent. I'm not gonna worry about it.) ... Live & learn, -Cliff Hall+++

Or better yet just put the wifey in front of the computer screen, show her this thread, and let her try to figure out what Cliff & Ed are talking about. That'll keep her busy until you get home from your round trip to Charlotte!

No take her with you. I took my new wife at the time to the Woodland rod get togather. I intended just just to spend just a 100 bucks on a few items. While I was away loading my stuff. Karen my wife was looking at things not saying much. While I was putting my stuff up a rod builder stopped by just to @#$%&, then he says I better get back in because my wife was buying the store out. (He laughted and left) When I got back in my wife had spent800 bucks on a new rod wrapper, blanks and assorted parts. So I saw take wife on vacation and come over
