wood and cork combo

Im placing two thin rings of walnut between a checker pattern of cork and burl should I bring the walnut down to finish size before gluing together since the cork is so much softer than the wood ?

I don't when I do my colored rings. They are made with tinted epoxy and cork dust and are hard. I sand down with sanding paper on a sanding block. Works well block

I like to use a sanding block to get every thing to the same diameter and concentric, the a combination of sanding block and free hand to get the final shape.

If it isn't a problem to reduce your walnut rings to the size of the cork prior to gluing I would as it starts you off with an even grip. You are going to have to even them up at some point anyway.
