Recoil Guides on heavy casting rods

A potential customer of mine has requested a G-Loomis GLX 7'-0" crank bait rod to be built and possibly use the Recoil guides he is seeing on these rods in one of the Cabelas catalogs. I can't for the life of me see this style of guide on ANY rod, let alone a GLX.

Looks like you could only afford money for the blank and grip but then had no money left over for good guides. I am sure they work fine or otherwise they would be used on the Loomis rods being sold by Cabelas. Many years ago a guide style came out called Foulproof. I used a few on ultra-lights and they were fine - but not on heavy, powerful rods.

Anyway, has anyone been using these guides and with what success?

Thanks to all.

Charlie

They will work fine, the casting and spinning guides are a heavier wire than the fly guides ( the heavy fly guides might be the same wire) reports are positive about them that I've heard. Don't think I'd use braid on them, the line won't hurt them, but the the dirt, etc. that gets in the braid can. Are you using the P844 GLX blank?

Take a look at Rainshadow / Forecast. There ring guides are reasonable

you can use them no problem, they work well. i personally only use them on light tipped dropshot rods.

Thanks Friends,

Yes, Spencer, the GLX MB844 blank. I can't for the life of me see me putting these guides on this rod. I try to build rods with not only style and some element of design but I don't think these guides will allow me to do that.

I don't care to build a rod that looks like it was purchased at a Blue Light Special no matter who built the blank. . I am sure they are GREAT guides, BUT . . . I guess if that's what the customer wants!!!

Thanks for all of the input. Keep 'em rollin.

Hi Charles,
You can find those guides on factory Loomis rods and for good reason. They are extremely light, almost
indestructible, corrosion resistant, and quite strong. The downsides are that they are not as ascetically
pleasing to some and not as slick as ceramics.

I see what you meean about powerful. The MB 844 is quite a stiff and fast blank for crankbaits, more a big bass pitching stick. Usually you see the more moderate popping rod blanks used here like the P 844.

I have to agree with Spencer on the blank choice. The MB 844 is one stout stick. I would be afraid that your going to have alot of pulled trebles when the bass take that dive at the boat.
Now the P 844 on the other hand would work nicely as would the CB 845 or 847..........................

I have just bought a set of recoil guides and truly think they are well crafted and do not look "blue light" to me at all. Just an opinion and I have not put them on a rod yet. The weight is like nothing.

Was at a fishing show last week. Looking at G.Loomis Factory rods. That had the recoil's on them. Had them on a flipping stick. So as far as Loomis is concerned they'll work.
