I went to varnish a complete rod and can not get it to level out all over. What is the trick it is suppose to be self leveling. That is not happening.Any hints on how to put the shiny coat over paint and have it be level will help.i am new to rod building so any help would be great thanks Re: Rod Varnish

I thin my spar with mineral spirits and either wipe it on with a coffee filter....sort of works. Or I airbrush it on in light coats allowing each coat to dry and level on my dryer and then cure before each additional coat.
Dead beat on my end....can you tell. Derek Re: Rod Varnish

Kenneth,
If you are using the Gudebrod rod finish, it is 'self leveling' as long as you put it on in very thin coats. Use a lint free rag, coffee filter, or Scotchbrite pad to apply sevral very light coats to the blank before adding guides/hardware, etc. If you try to brush it on an entire rod blank you'll be disapointed. If you want a heavier application, you'll need a rod turner or 'dryer' that rotates the rod while the finish cures. Really handy tool to have. Good Luck! Buddy Re: Rod Varnish

There is a great article in the library here that discusses this very subject. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
