I am restoring an old Fishing Rod and need to know the best method to remove the old reel seat without damaging the blank. I split a reel seat on another rod I am restoring easily with a sheetrock knife. I just wanted to know if there is a way to remove the reel seat without damaging it too much to use it on another project.

Just warm some water in a pot and put a zip lock bag around the reel seat. Put the bag/rod in the warm water. Wait until the water is close to boiling. Take it out of the water, give the reel seat a couple of turns and it will slide off. I have never had a problem with this method (which I learned on this board).

Depending on the adhesive used and how old it is and how good of job was done, some of these require the stubborn Norwegian in me to get them off, but they come off eventually. Haven't "not" got one off yet. Some are pretty tough though...

Remember, too much heat can also break down the adhesive used in graphite rod construction, too.

Thanks for the information. I thought about hot water, but I was concerned it would damage the rod blank. I will use your method on my next old rod I restore.
