How is this done? I've got some good Musky rods that need new butt grips bad. Whats the best way to get the old one off and the new one on??

Its not easy...in the past I've painstakingly sliced the foam off the but with a sharp HD sheet rock blades and fine ones, careful not to damage the blank. Once you get down to the adhesive, apply a liitle heat to soften the adhesive and scrap some more..you have to bring down to the blank again, or as close as you can get.

Now you have to slip a foam grip on a blank from "behind" the rod (not easy)...one option is to ream a foam grip to the exact diameter of the diameter of the butt, and then build up the now tapered butt section with tape.... or if you have an air compressor , and using a grip thats ID should be snug around the reel seat area..jam the grip onto the butt of the rod, apply a very thin coat of your favorite epoxy to the exposed butt section, and by applying sealed compressed air to the other end of the grip ( a little jury rigging may be needed for the "seal"), the foam will expand and as you apply air pressure, and the grip can be advanced.

Or.....because this method is not to easy, and rather time consuming...use heat shrink tubing over your current grips and sand the tubing at high speed with 60 grit and light pressure to add "grip" to a smooth surface.
