Building my first rod and was wondering, which way is the prefered to wrap the ferules. Should I start at the end of the ferrule and wrap inwards or should I wrap towards the end of the ferule. Also I have read different suggestions of long the wraps on the ferules should be, are there any basic rules for the length?(building an #8 4 pieces fly rod).

Start at the opening. Pack toward the opening, tightly, leave a little showing or you go off the end, but as close as you can get, it is there to help the blank from splitting. Size is usually 2 times hole size.
Also be careful how tight you put the rod together before wrapping, not too tight or you may have trouble getting them apart ? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/16/2006 07:20AM by bill boettcher. Re: Wrapping ferrules, which way

There is no right or wrong way. I think you will hear both ways depending on the responder. I find wrapping from the ferrule end towards the tip works well for me as Bill describes. Try both ways and see what works best for you, Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: Wrapping ferrules, which way

As a contrain argument, I wrap from the tip to the ferrule opening. I feel that I can get a thread closer to the edge and perhaps reinforce the area better.

Thanks for the tips. I'll start with the wrapping of ferrules today and see which way feels best..
