Locking wrap

I am new to rod building. I just purchased a Dan Craft Sig V 894-3. I am just starting to wrap it with single foot wire guides, do you guys recomend a locking wrap like the forhan, or is it overkill. Also can you recomend any spacing to start out with on this particular rod. Just so I can work on perfecting placement.

Thanks

I do a Forhan locking wrap on all single foot guides.
You could get in touch with Dan on that spacing, or start with a factory spacing, then adjust with the Static Test. Articles are in the Library page.

1) I never do a Forhan lock on my freshwater fly rods. I consider it unnecessary. I have single foot guides break off; I've never had one pull out.

2) Dan has a very thorough multi-page guide spacing document for many rods, including all of his of course.

I have built the exact same rod -- the blank was personally recommended to me by Dan. I promise that you will be satisfied. If you need Dan's spacing, send me an e-mail and I will send it to you.

On fly rods I do a security wrap where you take the thread past the guide leg for a few turns and tie off there. On freshwater casting rods with single foot guides I do go all the way and use the Forhan type wrap.

The Forhan wrap is so simple and easy to apply that I wouldn't be with out it on any rod using single foot guides. I really can't find a reason to omit it.

I concur, since I’ve started using it I doubt if I would ever go back! Just a little extra insurance with what amounts to a few extra wraps of thread. How could ask for more!

The locking wrap is one of the simplest things to add to separate a custom rod from a factory rod and well
worth the effort! In fact it's no effort at all!

I have one question about the forhan wrap. Does it interfere with making adjustments to guide alignment? From looking at it, it seems it would.

If your thread tension is right you can still mke minor adjustments. I do it on each rod I build.

Then also some times on fly guides I go around the post only 2 times.
