You need to know the diameter of the blank where the winding check will go and get one a tad bigger to allow for flexing of the blank,

Steve -
The winding check is going to go above the fore grip - measure the blank diameter where the for grip will end (have to account for taper of
the blank).

If you get the two next sizes down from your butt diameter, one will work just fine.

Steve,
I just emailed an Excel file to you. The file is one of the tabs in an Excel file that I use as my rod building journal. In the file I correlated the nickel silver winding checks that Cabelas offers to bare blank diameters, to the same diameter with one coating of size A nylon thread, and to the same diameter with two coatings of size A nylon thread. I like having one layer of thread as a cushion under a rigid nickel silver ring.

Good Luck,
Jeff Shafer

If you are sliding it over one or two coats of high buid over a diamond wrap, you might want to get one size larger than the blank. Checks are cheap so order a few different diameters. Ed
