Wrapping stand-up rod using bumper system

I've done few a stand-up rods in the 80-130 class. I've always made an under wrap, finish coat, overwrap, finish coat, another over wrap and a finish coat. All this done with size A thread and conventional set up. When using the bumper system would you still wrap the guides the same? Since there is now more pressure pulling on the guides I didn't know if wrapping them would be any different than the conventional way.

Thanks,
Steve

The amount of side pressure would be far less now that the bulk of the guides will be under the rod. The Bumper should have side or out pressure on it (the line will press it into the rod blank if it's located properly) and the butt guide is the only one on top. I don't know that a rod that heavy would really suffer from underwraps so if you like using them I'd go ahead and use them. But if you skipped them, I don't think you'd miss them on the Bumper or bottom guides. Because those are heavier blanks with beefy walls, it's really just a personal preference sort of thing in this instance.

I would still use a double overwrap on rods that heavy to provide for long term durability in rough conditions. Underwrap or not.

Tom,
Using the bumper guide is no problem. I was just wondering if the wraps need to be wrapped, I guess, beefier since the guides are being pulled on now. I just didn't want to have a guide pulled off. I plan on building another heavy rod using the bumper system before red snapper season comes back in. I'm trying to sell this guy, who I've built three 80-130 class rods for, rods built the "uncoventional" way. I know the spiral or bumper system is best but it's hard to change someone's mind about something till they have experienced.

Thanks,
Steve

You could let him try it out and see if he likes it ? He may want you to change the other rods ?

You're never going to have a guide "pulled off." Thread wraps are extremely strong. The reason for double overwraps is to provide some margin for abrasion and such over the years. But you'll never have a guide pull through even a single wrap of A thread. You may wear through it eventually, but you won't just pop a guide through the thread.

Thanks Tom! That's what I needed to know. Hopefully, after I build this stand up bumper system rod it will change this guy's mind about the conventional way. I also need to start charging more. LOL!

Thanks,
Steve
