Cutting burl cork ring

Having access to just normal shop tools, what is the best way to cut a regular size burl cork ring in half? I plan to put them into the handle of a small fly rod. I have never done this before. The rod will be for me. I am not a perfectionest but have been getting much better due to this forum and all the great tips I've gotten. I am even going to make the big rod show this year. Really looking forward to it. Thanks Steve

I just did a search on "slicing cork rings" and found the info I wanted. I was looking for a saw to use and found the name and what one looks like. Do a search and you will get a lot of info on the subject.

Guess you didn't see the vacuum cork cutting jig in RodMaker a couple issues back. Easy to make and simple to use. Works like a charm. Cost me a grand total of $2 for the vacuum fitting stuff. The two pieces of wood I had laying around and the circle cutter I had. Great tool for any rod building show to have around.

I bought mine before thinking of building my own; before the RMM article. They are available at Custom Tackle. They have one for slicing them in half and another to cut a ring of any thickness into pie shaped pieces for neat little project inlays, too.

You can put the rings on a mandrel or scrap piece of blank, turn them on your drill and cut them with any fine tooth saw blade. Even a fine tooth hack saw blade. Then run them flat on a piece of sand paper to clean them up.
