need small amount of bamboo rod finish

I do not use the "dip" technique, rather the brush technique. Used to buy from Anglers Workshop but they no longer carry it. This is not for a fishing, bamboo rod, just a couple of wall hangers repair jobs so I am not looking to spend a lot of money.

Please advise if any of the sponsors carry small bottles of cane finish. As always, thanks for the help.

Buzz,
You can use any good spar varnish of Minwax Helmsman. I would be happy to dip them for you?

Hey Scott,
Thanks for the quick reply. I should have went "local" and contacted you direct for the information but I lost your card.
I will give your suggestion a try.
Having trouble casting your fly rods on Lake Winnebago lately?

Could I use Gudebrod ready-to-use Rod Finish Regular Build on this same type of rod?
It will also be fust a wall hanger.
Thanks,Mike

go to walmart. in the gun area you should find a small bottle of TRU OIL. no very expensive. about 5 bucks i think. makes a good finish for bamboo and can be rubbed on with your fingers. dries fast too.

if the wraps are varnished and it is not all flakey and cracked the tru oil should be ok. rub it on very thin and rub it out untill you get some drag. after it dries rub on a second and then third coat. it really gives a nice low key finish. it the varnish is cracked and the thread was color preserved it might penitrate the wrap and create some dark streaks but varnis will to. the key is not to flood it. just rub the thinest coats on. you can do the same thing with varnish by rubbing it in with your fingers.

Just go buy a Helmans in a spray can a lot of people get good results that way. I dip my rods and I use spar on wraps also. You can build a dip tube for about 10.00 and just thin 60/40 40 mineral spirits. Then just pul out in one steady motion and let hang in cabinet. When you pull out just blow on each guide to blow varnish out. Been useing this method for about 10 years. But I think for wall hangers you can just use spray cans of Helmans. The tru oil bit will work also but it takes so many coats and way to much time involved.

Thanks Dave

Tru-oil or Wipe On varnish applied with a coffee filter for the blank. You can use a soft brush to apply the same finish to the wraps. For a wall hanger, only a couple of coats is necessary on the wraps.

be careful about putting tru oil on wraps. if you put it on too thick it will aligator very quickly. just rub it on thin and it will work better.
