Feather Inlay practice blank

I have some old fly rod blanks that have a glossy finish on them. Could I use them for practicing feather inlays or does the finish have to be matte.

Bruce, the glossy will work fine for this. I'd wrap some different colors of thread and put some finish over them, too, just to see what different feathers look like over different colors, too!

glossy will work but I would scuff slightly with grey scotch brite pad to help adherence.

I use wooden dowels coated with permagloss or spar varnish for thread color test wraps and have put feather inlays on them also, then finish them, set them outside in the weather to get an idea on what will looks the best after 3 or 4 months. Have some out now but they are covered with 3 feet of snow so won't be able to look at them until spring, if it ever comes.
