Does static guide placement work for flyrods too?I always just tape guides and test cast and adjust from there.

A fly rod is no different from any other type of rod. Static guide stress distribution works for all of them.

I sure hope so, because I've been using that method on fly rods for a while. I do it with the guides down; the guide spaicings turned out much too close when I did it guides up.

when You say guides down do you mean in relationship to the spine (putting guides on same side of spine?)

Steve - I think Bill means that he oriented the "guides down" during his Static Distribution test. That is, he bent the rod while holding the guides on the DOWN-side of the curve. The guides are INTO THE CURVE, like on a SPINNING rod. This orientation needs fewer guides to distribute the load than if the guides are held in the UP position, above the rod, on the outside of the rod bend, like an old fashioned CASTING rod.

Relative Spine-Guide orientation is not what he is talking about. That is a whole 'nother can of worms. ... And that one says, spine may not matter much at all, so orienting the rod blank's natural curve "belly-down" may be the preferred way to go.

Cliff understands me - I extend the rod off of a book shelf with the guides facing the floor, not the ceiling. Didn't mean anything about guide vs. spine relationship.
