A friend just informed me that he wanted to sell his light duty wood lathe and I may be interested if it will turn cork handle and such.

It will handle cork just fine.

It should do what you want for grips, reel seats, etc. If he doesn't have one, you might want a 3 jaw chuck for mandrels and a 1/2" drill chuck for boring wood seats, grips.

I'm glad you bought it, I was going to advise you to snag it up!! Now you'll be able to turn just about anything you want. Pay attention to Mikes post about a 3 or 4 jaw chuck, and a 1/2 in. drill chuck. You may want to think about purchasing Andy Dears DVD about wood turning in Rod Building.

I have virtually the same lathe from Grizzly. It works it is the best I can say about it. It is pretty light duty, I broke the tool post off and if you are going to be doing any drilling witht the tail stock be sure to snug the jam nut up abit while drilling, it will help keep things going straight.

Now buy Andy Dear's "The Wood Lathe in Rodbuilding". Andy talks you through building a reelseat insert and a fly grip with much more information included. Ralph

Buy a drill chuck from Harbor Freight for $9.99. I bought one to replace my less than year old Craftsman because the Craftsman never ran true. The HF drill chuck has no runout at all. Also, don't waste money on a 3 jaw chuck, you don't need it. Buy the Nova Midi Chuck. The Nova is a 4 jaw chuck and it will hold Andy's 1/4" mandrel just fine. If the only thing you want to do is turn grips, then you can just use the drill chuck. But beware, the lathe all by itself can be very addicting. I bought mine for grips and reel seats, but now I'm doing a whole lot more than that.

Thanks for all the great responses. The Lathe is at its new home and we (the lathe and I) are trying to find its new spot in the shop. Looks as if I may need to purchace a few other things before I get started LOL. Sure glad it is Christmas time.
